Adolescence is a new Netflix series set in the UK that delves deep into the challenges faced by young people, exploring complex themes such as toxic masculinity, online radicalisation and the psychological and societal pressures that can shape harmful behaviours – including the harrowing case of a 13-year-old boy who murders his female classmate.
This powerful story reminds us that these problems don’t just vanish after high school – they change and continue. It is a reminder of similar issues closer to home. At Excelsia University College, we recognise the urgent need to understand and address the structural and cultural drivers behind gender-based violence (GBV), especially within the higher education space.
In line with the Federal Government’s Action Plan Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Higher Education, Excelsia has formed a dedicated working group to lead our prevention and response efforts. Through education, consultation and training, we are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all.
Here’s how we’re taking action:
- Student Project Surveys: Gathering data to better understand student awareness of GBV.
- Focus Group Consultations: Engaging staff in meaningful discussions to identify challenges and co-create solutions.
- Staff Training Roll-out: Equipping staff with tools and knowledge to recognise, prevent and respond to GBV.
- Resource Dissemination: Providing ongoing support, materials and guidance to embed lasting cultural change.
Our academic leaders and students are actively involved in this initiative, conducting research in this space, contributing fresh insights and furthering the conversation around prevention and support. As a higher education institution grounded in Christian values and holistic care, Excelsia is committed to addressing GBV not only through policy but through action – by cultivating empathy, accountability and informed action across our campus. Daniel Johnston, Director of Learning and Teaching, expressed, ‘As educators and leaders, it is our collective responsibility to create safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces, actively challenging gender-based violence. At Excelsia, we commit ourselves to empowering voices, fostering empathy, and promoting a culture of zero tolerance towards GBV, ensuring dignity and equality for all.’
If you’d like to learn more about our ongoing work in this space or explore how you can be part of a values-driven academic community that stands for safety and respect, we welcome you to explore our courses here.
Together, we can be part of the change.
