Roxanne Heng – Harmonising faith and music

Roxanne Heng’s musical journey has been one of faith, growth and bold creativity. She began her studies at another college and soon realised that Excelsia University College was part of the same church community. This connection made her decision to continue her Bachelor of Music at Excelsia feel like a natural next step. ‘Knowing it was a Christian school made it easier for me to decide,’ she shares. ‘There was a strong sense of alignment between my faith and the direction I wanted to take in my music career.’

During her time at Excelsia, Roxanne immersed herself in the world of music and production. She gained hands-on experience in stage productions, audio and sound mixing and music production – skills that would later prove invaluable in both her ministry and creative pursuits. ‘Excelsia equipped me in so many areas,‘, she explains. ‘From expanding my genre knowledge to diving deep into more challenging theory concepts, it helped build my confidence as a musician.’

What stood out most for Roxanne was the supportive and nurturing environment the faculty fostered. ‘The teachers were kind and friendly. They genuinely cared – not just about your work, but about you as a person,’ she reflects. ‘That made a world of difference.’

Roxanne’s understanding of music evolved throughout her studies, especially in the way she blended classical music theory with contemporary composition. A standout subject for her was the course in creative formation, which helped her shape her identity as a professional artist. ‘It taught me how to apply for grants, set up my own website, and market myself as a creative entrepreneur. It was so helpful.’

Since graduating, Roxanne has remained deeply connected to both her faith and the arts. She now manages one of her church’s locations and oversees worship teams. Most recently, she stepped into the role of Choir Director for the newly established Australian Christian Arts Organisation – further evidence of her commitment to building and inspiring communities through music. To prospective students considering a career in music Roxanne offers this advice, ‘If you’re looking for a group of teachers who care for your wellbeing above anything else – Excelsia is where you’d want to be.’
