Phillip Taylor, a graduate of Excelsia College, fondly recalls his time at the institution where he discovered the unique synergy between faith and artistry. ‘I am grateful for the many gifted teachers I had the privilege to study with,’ Taylor reflects. ‘With fellow students, I experienced how faith can shape and be expressed through what we do artistically. There was a synergy where I was able to achieve more than I could have on my own, through networking in this creative environment.’ This environment not only inspired him but also paved the way for his flourishing career in music.
During his studies, Taylor pursued a degree in creative arts with a major in music ministry. This foundation prepared him for a multifaceted career in music, particularly within local church settings. He has taken on roles such as music director, worship leader, and keyboard player. ‘My time at Excelsia taught me perseverance through both the difficult and good times,’ he explains. His education also equipped him with skills that he still applies today, from writing and recording original music to performing as a keyboard player and vocalist in various jazz settings along the South Coast.
Reflecting on key influences during his time at Excelsia, Taylor credits the talented artists he worked with. His final-year project, for instance, involved recording his first album, Praise is Waiting, alongside jazz guitar instructor Noel Johnston and jazz piano master Bill Risby. These experiences significantly shaped Taylor’s musical development and continue to resonate in his career.
Fast forward to today and Taylor is preparing for his upcoming concert at Excelsia College, promoting his second album, Long to Look, which he launched in 2022. His performance will feature a unique blend of jazz-infused gospel, influenced by Christian artists like Rich Mullins and Keith Green, alongside jazz inspirations. ‘I’m excited to bring my jazz-infused, gospel-focused style of piano and vocals back to Sydney, where I honed my craft,’ he shares. For this performance, Taylor will be joined by ‘Mayfair Lane’, a talented singer-songwriter duo comprising Rhys and Esther Duursma.
When asked about his preparation for the concert, Taylor highlights that this event will be a special opportunity to showcase the songs and stories behind his latest album. ‘This concert is a chance for fans who know my music and for those hearing it for the first time to experience it live,’ he says. Taylor hopes the event will encourage awareness of Excelsia College, where students can study their God-given gifts in a faith-filled environment and be equipped for success. He warmly invites current students to attend, adding, ‘I’d love to see current students come along and enjoy a fun night of entertainment. The more the merrier!’
Phillip Taylor’s journey from Excelsia College to his upcoming concert serves as a testament to how faith, education, and artistry can come together to inspire and influence not only an individual’s career but also the wider community.
