Jacqueline Woods Shares How Excelsia’s Community Helped Her Achieve the Barnabas Award

Jacqueline Woods, who transitioned from a background in pathology to pursue a career in counselling, recently received Excelsia College’s Barnabas Award. This award, bestowed by the School of Counselling, honours the master’s graduate who best exemplifies the attitudes of servanthood and encouragement within the Excelsia College community.

When we asked Jacqueline what inspired her to pursue a Master of Counselling, she said, ‘After leaving pathology and starting a family, I knew I wanted to work directly with people, not in a laboratory. I’ve always been drawn to understanding people and their stories, which led me to pursue counselling.’

Jacqueline describes achieving the Barnabas Award as a humbling experience. ‘I attended classes, interacted with my classmates and coursework, and we consistently supported and uplifted each other. I genuinely feel any of my supportive classmates could have been equally deserving of this award!’

Jacqueline leaned heavily on her support network during tough times. ‘My classmates understood the struggle, my family provided emotional support, and close friends stepped up. Their support was crucial in my academic journey.’ Balancing personal and academic responsibilities was a significant challenge but also a rewarding one. ‘My family was incredibly patient, and my husband supported me through late nights and missed family times, which ultimately helped us all grow.’

Reflecting on her experience at Excelsia College, Jacqueline emphasises the value of studying counselling in person. ‘Having supportive lecturers, insightful counsellors, and amazing classmates has been invaluable. It’s not just about learning the profession but also discovering more about myself. It’s been life– changing.’

Looking ahead, Jacqueline is focusing on her role as a counsellor for a non–profit organisation and expanding her professional horizons. ‘I’m committed to continuous learning and open to wherever my journey in counselling takes me.’

Jacqueline Woods’ story is a testament to the transformative power of community support and personal dedication, highlighting how Excelsia College nurtures its students to excel both academically and personally.
