Excelsia University College is delighted to welcome Professor Lisa Hodge as the new Head of School for Social Work and Counselling. With decades of experience in higher education, counselling practice, and academic leadership, Professor Hodge brings with her a passion for nurturing both students and staff within a supportive and values-driven learning environment.
Professor Hodge was drawn to Excelsia for its warm and inclusive culture – an atmosphere where people are genuinely valued. She explains, ‘I was inspired to join Excelsia University College as it fosters a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for both staff and students. Students from very diverse backgrounds can grow academically and spiritually, and every staff member’s contribution is valued.’
In her new role, Professor Hodge is focused on championing academic excellence while building strong foundations for growth. She is deeply committed to ensuring that the curriculum remains relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the social work and counselling sectors. Just as important to her is supporting the teaching staff through mentorship and professional development opportunities and creating space for collaboration across disciplines. Professor Hodge is also passionate about establishing community partnerships and boosting the quality of field education placements, which she sees as critical to student development. She aims to position the Master of Counselling program as a national leader in education and practice, while also fostering a strong research culture that encourages knowledge sharing and real-world impact.
Having taught across more than 30 units at four Australian universities, Professor Hodge’s breadth of teaching experience informs her inclusive and adaptable approach to education. Her career has seen her work with students across disciplines including social work, nursing, midwifery and sociology, in both domestic and international contexts. ‘This experience has enriched my understanding of aligning educational goals with societal needs, ensuring curriculum relevance, and fostering effective teaching practices,’ she shares.
Outside of academia, Professor Hodge’s counselling practice has been shaped by her dedication to mental health and advocacy. Her interest in eating disorders and body image emerged during her first 500-hour student placement at the Eating Disorders Association of South Australia – an experience that deeply moved and inspired her. This passion led to further research and eventually to the publication of her book Eating Disorders and Child Sexual Abuse. She recalls being invited to write the book after presenting her research at a national TASA Conference, where a senior editor in medical sociology at Springer recognised the significance of her work.
With a clear vision, a collaborative spirit and a heart for service, Professor Hodge is set to lead the School of Social Work and Counselling into an exciting new chapter – one that embraces excellence, innovation and meaningful connection with the community.
