HOW EXCELSIA COLLEGE’S SUPPORT MEASURES ARE HELPING STUDENTS DURING THE CURRENT PANDEMIC
Since the COVID-19 outbreak accelerated in March, Excelsia College has acted swiftly to respond to the needs of the student community. As a result, we have ensured that the global crisis has had as little impact on studies as possible, ensuring students can complete their degree as planned.
Over the last few months we have introduced a whole series of new support measures to help students meet current challenges and succeed in their studies.
Emergency Food Bank
In response to a growing demand for assistance from those who are struggling we launched our Emergency Food Bank Initiative. We understand that a number of students have found themselves without income or suffering from financial struggles as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. Therefore, this initiative is available to all our students and has focused on assisting those most in need. We have provided over 130 students with emergency food packs that include essential food items such as vegetables, rice, canned goods and plant-based products such as lentils. We plan to do this for as long as there is need and as long as we are able. Students can receive these food packs either by collecting from the College pantry or via delivery.
Excelsia College’s People and Culture Department has been working on assisting students with a newly introduced Job Support Initiative. 40 students are now working at the College and a second batch of recruitment has already begun to give students who are currently unemployed due to COVID-19 the opportunity to gain some income. With a great working environment and reputation, we help our students reach their professional goals and beyond.
All learning support now online
When we moved all our classes online in March, we also made all of our on-campus learning support available online. Excelsia offers virtual support to students to help with academic skills and assessment task analysis, including dedicated academics who are available to assist in real-time. Our careers and employability, course planning, and more is all being delivered remotely.
Supporting students wellbeing
All our counselling services are now delivered online. We’ve introduced more flexible appointment arrangements that allows students to meet their Counsellor via Zoom. At Excelsia College our Student Support Centre is eager to support our community during this time and we have various mental health, academic, disability and other support services available to all students. The mental health and safety of our students and staff is the primary concern.
As the situation with COVID-19 continues to evolve we are regularly updating our students via email on the latest administration and support information.
CEO of Excelsia College Peter McKeon writes: “Our community, like others around the world, is adapting to the impacts of COVID-19. As the College responds to these disruptions, we know that you too are facing your own challenges and having to find ways to adapt how you live and how you study. There are a range of support channels available to our students, and we have dedicated staff ready to help. Our priorities are the safety and wellbeing of our students, and helping them continue to learn.”
