As Australia faces increasingly complex social challenges, including growing mental health concerns, youth disengagement, family vulnerability and community wellbeing issues, the need for qualified and compassionate community services professionals continues to grow.
Excelsia University College is proud to announce that its pioneering Master of Community Services and Youth Work (MCSYW), provisionally accredited by Community Work Australia (CWA), has been developed to help meet this workforce need while preparing a new generation of professionals to support individuals and families.
CWA is the peak national body for aspiring community workers and qualified professionals in welfare and human services. Commencing from Semester 1, 2027 at the Pennant Hills campus, the MCSYW combines academic excellence with practical, real-world learning. The new course offering forms part of Excelsia’s School of Counselling.
With more than 40 years of experience, Excelsia’s School of Counselling has built a strong reputation for producing career-ready graduates who contribute meaningfully to Australian society. As a not-for-profit Christian higher education provider, Excelsia is committed to developing graduates who create positive impact through service and leadership excellence.
‘We are delighted to launch this innovative program that equips students with the professional skills and self-awareness required to make meaningful contributions across the community welfare and social services sectors. Whether supporting young people through life’s challenges, strengthening communities or advocating for vulnerable individuals, our graduates will be equipped to create lasting impact,’ said Peter Mckeon, CEO.
Practice-focused degree
The course combines contemporary theory with professional practice, preparing you to work effectively across a diverse range of settings. With youth work embedded throughout the program, you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to support young people facing challenges related to mental health, family circumstances, and social inclusion.
Throughout the studies, you will be undertaking personal counselling to foster self-awareness and reflective practice. The course includes two supervised field education placements totalling 400 hours, allowing you to apply classroom learning in a professional environment.
You will also develop a deeper understanding of leadership and community development, political institutions in Australia, ethics and professional practice, trauma, grief and loss.
The program features a range of electives, allowing you to explore areas such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community practice, disability services, addictions, aged care, criminality, family systems, and cross-cultural practice.
You will graduate with a practical understanding of how to effectively support individuals and communities while building the critical communication and analysis skills valued across the social services sector.
Diverse career pathways
‘This qualification stands out for the breadth of opportunities it creates. Community services is a dynamic and rewarding field, offering graduates the chance to make a real difference while pursuing careers aligned with their passions. From welfare support and mental health to family services and advocacy, this course opens the door to an extensive range of career possibilities,’ said Professor Lisa Hodge, Head of Social Work and Counselling.
Graduates may be eligible to seek employment opportunities across government agencies, not-for-profit organisations, youth services, community welfare providers, correctional services and community development initiatives. Potential roles include youth worker, community services coordinator, welfare support worker, care coordinator, mental health worker and community development practitioner.
