Bethany Seto: A story of music, faith and friendship across cultures

When Bethany Seto first heard about Excelsia University College, it was through people she trusted – family members and teachers who had previously studied there. Their positive experiences left a strong impression, but what made Excelsia stand out to her was its Christian foundation. ‘As a committed Christian, this appealed to me,’ she explains. Beyond its spiritual focus, the music program itself captured Bethany’s attention. She was drawn to its structure and the opportunity to pursue a specific major, whether in jazz, classical, or contemporary music.

During her time at Excelsia, Bethany thrived in a nurturing and inclusive environment where both her musical and personal growth were supported by a close-knit community of peers and mentors. ‘It was the people I met at Excelsia that truly made my time here special,’ she says. ‘The teachers were supportive and gifted, pushing me in my musical ability and encouraging me to try new styles, like cross-cultural music.’

One of the most transformative aspects of her journey was building strong friendships with fellow students from Nepal. These relationships expanded her musical and cultural horizons, planting the seeds for a deeper appreciation of intercultural collaboration.

Among the many highlights of her student life were the Contemporary Music Showcases held each semester. These performances challenged her to step outside her comfort zone and explore new genres. ‘One showcase I will never forget was being part of a heavy rock/metal band in my second year,’ she laughs. ‘I don’t think my parents will forget that too.’

Bethany credits the Excelsia music program with equipping her with valuable skills in leadership, collaboration, and attentive listening – qualities essential for any ensemble musician. Learning to truly listen to others, rather than focusing solely on her own performance, was a lesson she continues to carry forward in her career.

Support from lecturers and mentors was a key factor in Bethany’s development. Their encouragement, paired with genuine care, created an environment where she could thrive both musically and personally. ‘My teachers cared for me as a person, not just another student,’ she recalls. ‘They were excited to share their gift of music with me and cheer me on. An encouraging, supportive environment is what a creative needs to thrive.’

Today, Bethany works as a piano teacher, performer and aged care entertainer. She finds joy in connecting with others through music, and she dreams of releasing an EP that reflects her journey and the voices that shaped it. Her heart remains open to new opportunities, creative growth and wherever her faith leads her next.

Bethany’s advice to current students is simple but powerful: embrace openness and curiosity. ‘I came to Excelsia with very specific goals in mind, but along the way I discovered new interests and new passions in music,’ she shares. ‘Don’t be afraid to try something new!’
