Biographical details

Professor Peter Camilleri has been a social worker, researcher and academic. He has been involved in teaching social work since 1986. He has worked as a social work practitioner in Tasmania, England and the Northern Territory working in adult mental health, rehabilitation, and child and adolescent mental health. He has been Professor of Social Work at several universities, Head of Schools of Social Work and Rector/Campus Dean. He has worked at University of South Australia, James Cook University, Australian Catholic University, University of Wollongong, and Central Queensland University.

Education

Professor Camilleri was awarded his PhD from Flinders University of South Australia in 1996. He received a Master’s in Science in Social Research from the University of Surrey and his honours degree in social work from the University of Sydney.

Awards and Honours

Professor Camilleri received the Australian Award for University Teaching Citation for outstanding contribution to student learning; and he has been a Visiting Professor at Pontifical University Lateran Rome Italy and School of Social Work University of St Thomas Minnesota USA. He has been an auditor for the Australian University Quality Agency (AUQA) and is currently on the expert panel for Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). He has been an assessor for the Australian Research Council, academic specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications and appointed international member for accreditation of social work courses for the New Zealand Social Work Registration Board.

Research interests

Professor Camilleri has been part of research teams which gained ARC Discovery grant and Emergency Management Australia funding. He has published either singly or collaboratively 5 books, 5 book chapters and 23 referred articles. He has research interests in the role of faith-based agencies in delivery of human services, case management and suicidal behaviours

Associations

Professor Camilleri is a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers. He has been National Vice-President of the AASW and is currently a reviewer of social work programs for accreditation.
